What Is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, teaches the brain to reprocess trauma. EMDR helps clients with post-traumatic stress disorder reduce the impact of flashbacks and panic attacks. Sometimes, traumatic events shut down the brain, which cannot handle the trauma. Thanks to the work of Dr. Francine Shapiro, psychologists have a new tool to treat PTSD effectively.

Our EMDR therapy program relieves several symptoms, including:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Lack of motivation
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Interpersonal behaviors
  • Fear of being alone
  • Lack of trust in other people

EMDR started out as a treatment for PTSD. However, it’s now used to treat other disorders, such as substance abuse disorders, phobias, body dysmorphic disorders, performance anxiety, panic attacks, and grief. It’s a cost-effective, evidence-based approach that helps you process frightening information more effectively.

What to Expect in the EMDR Therapy Program

Our EMDR therapy program takes an 8-step approach to treating substance abuse disorders and co-occurring PTSD during the dual diagnosis treatment program in Florida.

1. Take a History

During this step, you talk about why you are in recovery and any memories that relate to traumatic events in your past. Additionally, you can talk about your triggers. Finally, your therapist determines whether this therapy will work for you.

2. Preparation

Your therapist will discuss how disturbing events get stuck in the brain and how EMDR can help you process these memories. You will also go through an example of how the eye movements work. Sometimes, tapping or other sounds can stimulate EMDR. You learn to go to a calm space in your mind to reinforce the eye movements.

3. Assessment

During this stage, you dive into a target memory for the EMDR. It requires a deep sharing of the traumatic event and any negative beliefs you have about it. It’s difficult. However, you also choose a positive belief to associate with the memory, which feels great.

4. Desensitization

In our EMDR therapy program, desensitization involves a lot of tapping or eye movement. You use information gathered in step 3 to connect to your target memory. Then, you begin the eye movements and reprocess the memory. Often, clients’ minds begin to go through other events, so it’s important to stay focused.

If you become emotional during the movements, start changing your thoughts. This relaxes your face and body when you begin to feel more positive. It may take more than one session to process various traumatic events.

5. Installation

When you no longer feel distressed over the memory, you can talk about the positive belief you used. Your therapist helps you install a link between the target memory and your positive statement.

6. Body Scan

Now it’s time to ensure the negative belief about the memory has left for good. The EMDR therapy program therapist checks your body for tightness, tension, or stressful feelings. Eye movements and tapping can resolve these remaining points of stress.

7. Closure

If the target memory hasn’t been fully resolved, your therapist helps you clear your mind before you go. After the session, it’s not unusual to have insights, vivid dreams, or feelings about the memory. Journaling helps you track your feelings to share at the next session.

8. Reevaluation

During this step of our EMDR therapy program, you can talk about any progress or concerns that arose since the previous session. This includes feelings and actions in the face of triggers. You may decide to continue with the same target. You may be asked to play a movie in your head to increase your confidence in your progress to date.
