During drug and alcohol addiction, there are many ways to learn and grow. One of them is learning from your peers, mentors, and other people who have been through what you have. Our group therapy program at Wellness Counseling and Residential Detox is designed to give you the tools and resources you need to heal comprehensively after addiction detox programs.
What Is a Group Therapy Program?
Group therapy is a type of peer support and resource. This method of treatment has been used since the mid-1960s as a tool to help people dealing with drug and alcohol dependence to find support. It is one component of a larger treatment plan we’ll offer to you.
In group therapy, you’ll have a safe place to learn and grow with people that have similar experiences. You can participate by telling your story or asking questions or simply by listening to other people. Many people with drug and alcohol addiction feel as though no one really gets it. They feel alone and isolated from the rest of the world. In group therapy, you’re no longer battling this alone.
How Does Group Therapy Work?
There’s no pressure in our group therapy program. You’ll work within a group of people who share the same type of struggle you’re facing. A therapist is there to guide the session and to help each person have their opportunity. This is a very process-oriented addiction treatment therapy. It is a type of both educational and experiential treatment.
What Can a Group Therapy Program Do for You?
During a session within our group therapy program, you’ll have a chance to open up and learn about yourself and about your chronic disease. Each need is different, but there are many benefits to being a part of this type of program, including:
- Learn new, healthy ways to cope
- Gain greater empathy
- Improve your self-understanding
- Boost your self-esteem
- Reduce the risk of relapse
- Improve stress control
- Feel a stronger sense of belonging
Most of the time, group therapy is all about peers sharing information and insight with each other. Each person in the group has a different past and is at a different stage in their recovery process. Each person has information and insight to share with everyone else in the group. You can learn from other people’s experiences so you don’t make the same mistakes.
How Does Group Therapy Fit In?
Our group therapy program at Wellness Counseling and Residential Detox is one component of a much larger addiction treatment plan. You’ll still have individual counseling sessions with a therapist as well. You may also be involved in family therapy to strengthen relationships with your loved ones.
Group therapy compliments other types of therapy methods, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy, and EMDR therapy treatments. It is available as a component of our residential treatment program, as well as some outpatient services. Our team is here to support you with a range of treatment options to help you find the information and help you need to continue on a path towards long-term recovery.
